Former Mayor Atiqul Islam and Ex-Minister Palak Arrested in New Cases

In connection with the anti-discrimination movement, a Dhaka court has ordered the arrest of former Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam in an attempted murder case filed at Uttara East Police Station involving Istiaque Mahmud, and former ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak in a murder case filed at Mohammadpur Police Station concerning the killing of truck driver Md. Hossain.

On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate M A Mizbah Ur Rahman’s court issued the order. The accused were presented before the court, where the investigating officers requested their arrest, which the court subsequently granted.

According to details of Atiqul’s case, during the anti-discrimination movement on July 18, 2024, Istiaque Mahmud, a businessman, along with others, participated in a program. At Sector 4, Azampur, near Nawab Habibullah High School under Uttara East Police Station, members of Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League allegedly attacked and opened fire. Istiaque was shot in the abdomen and received treatment at Evercare Hospital. A case was filed on October 29, 2024.
Regarding Palak’s case, on July 19, 2024, during the movement, truck driver Md. Hossain was heading to his rented home after parking his truck in Gabtoli. Around 2:30 PM, near Hossain Market in Chand Udyan, Mohammadpur, he was shot in the left side of his chest by the accused. His body was found on the street at 3:00 AM the following day. On August 31, 2024, his mother, Reena Begum, filed a murder case at Mohammadpur Police Station.
