Government Providing Special Support for Halal Product Manufacturing: Ashiq Chowdhury

The government is establishing special economic zones for halal product manufacturing and offering policy support to attract both domestic and foreign investments. This was stated by Ashiq Chowdhury, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) and Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA).

He highlighted that Bangladesh is working to position itself competitively in the global halal economy, valued at 7 trillion dollars.

Chowdhury shared these insights on Sunday (August 3) at a seminar titled *‘Halal Economy 360: Global Growth’*, organized by the Bangladesh-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BMCCI) at Hotel Westin in the capital.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Mominul Islam, Assistant Professor at the International University of Business, Agriculture, and Technology. The event was chaired by Syed Alamgir, Advisor to the Business Administration Department of Uttara University. A panel discussion included experts from halal product manufacturing, certification, and supply chain sectors, who emphasized improving Bangladesh’s halal certification process in line with international standards.

Dr. Mominul Islam presented an overview of the halal economy and outlined potential strategies for Bangladesh.

Chowdhury stressed the importance of public-private partnerships to foster innovation and sustainable development in the halal industry. He also highlighted plans to strengthen certification and quality control processes through joint initiatives with Malaysia.

He noted, “It’s true that most halal products are manufactured in non-Muslim countries. This creates a significant opportunity for Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority nation.”

BMCCI President Sabbir A. Khan emphasized the need to reduce Bangladesh’s over-reliance on the ready-made garment sector. “The halal economy opens a new door of opportunity for us. By 2030, Bangladesh could export halal products worth 7 to 8 billion dollars to Malaysia alone,” he said.

Khan also cited projections that the global halal food market, valued at 3.3 trillion dollars in 2025, could grow to 9.45 trillion dollars by 2034.
