Gunmen Fire at Businessman’s House in Chattogram’s Hathazari After Extortion Demand of Tk 50 Lakh via WhatsApp

Chattogram, August 20, 2025 – Unidentified gunmen opened fire at the residence of businessman Mohammad Jahangir in Hathazari Upazila, Chattogram, following an extortion demand of Tk 50 lakh sent via WhatsApp. The incident occurred around 11:00 AM on Wednesday in North Mekhal village under Mekhal Union.

According to police, a team visited the site and recovered nine empty bullet casings and one live bullet. The businessman, who is involved in the brick kiln and real estate business, had received a Tk 50 lakh extortion demand via WhatsApp 15 days prior but did not take it seriously. On Wednesday, six individuals arrived at his house on two motorcycles. Four of them scaled the boundary wall, entered the premises, and fired several rounds at the two-story building before fleeing.

Local sources confirmed that the house was unoccupied at the time, as Jahangir and his family reside in Chattogram city, preventing any casualties. Hathazari Circle’s Assistant Superintendent of Police, Quazi Md Tareque Aziz, stated that CCTV footage showed four masked individuals firing shots. He noted that the businessman had not informed the police about the extortion demand earlier but has now reported it, suspecting the attack was linked to his refusal to pay. The police have advised Jahangir to file a case, and an investigation will follow once the case is registered.
