Spanish Influencer Misses Flight Due to ChatGPT’s Incorrect Travel Advice

Many people use OpenAI’s AI-based chatbot, ChatGPT, for daily tasks and advice. However, a Spanish influencer, Mery Caldas, and her partner recently missed their flight to Puerto Rico due to incorrect travel information provided by ChatGPT. The popular content creator planned a vacation in Puerto Rico but was unable to board the flight after relying on the chatbot’s advice.

In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter), Mery Caldas is seen breaking down in tears at the airport. She explained that ChatGPT informed her that European Union citizens do not need a visa to travel to Puerto Rico. While this is technically true for short-term visits, travelers are required to obtain an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), a detail ChatGPT omitted. This oversight led to their inability to board the flight.

Acknowledging her mistake, Caldas said she should have done more research. She jokingly remarked that ChatGPT might have given her incorrect information as “revenge” for occasionally insulting it, adding, “I don’t trust it anymore.”
This is not the first instance of ChatGPT’s advice causing problems. Recently, a 60-year-old man from New York fell critically ill after following the chatbot’s dietary recommendations. He spent three weeks in the hospital after drastically reducing sodium in his diet, leading to a dangerous condition called hyponatremia, where blood sodium levels drop to abnormally low levels.
