Israel Prepares to Forcibly Relocate Gaza Residents to the South

The Israeli military is preparing to forcibly relocate Palestinians from northern Gaza to the south, with the operation set to begin on Sunday, August 17, 2025. This follows Israel’s recent announcement to launch a new offensive to seize control of Gaza City.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared last week that the military has been authorized to destroy Hamas’s remaining strongholds in Gaza City in the north and the Al-Mawasi area further south. The Israeli army’s Arabic-language spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, stated on Saturday that Gaza residents will be provided with tents and other shelter supplies, to be transported through the Kerem Shalom crossing by the United Nations and international aid organizations.

The United Nations has not yet commented directly on Israel’s announcement. However, on Thursday, the UN warned that implementing the plan to capture Gaza City could plunge thousands of families into a severe humanitarian crisis. Currently, approximately one million people reside in Gaza City, though it remains unclear where they will be relocated. The Palestinian group Islamic Jihad has condemned the plan as part of Israel’s “occupation of Gaza” and a “blatant mockery of international law.” The group stated that forcing people to flee amid hunger, massacres, and displacement constitutes an ongoing crime against humanity.
Over the past week, the Israeli military has intensified attacks on Gaza City’s Zeitoun and Shujaiya neighborhoods. Local reports indicate that at least three people have been killed and many others injured in airstrikes and tank assaults.
