Despite the cessation of protests, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) in Bangladesh has failed to regain momentum in revenue collection. In July, the NBR faced a shortfall of approximately Tk 2,864 crore in tax and duty collection.
According to data released by the NBR on Wednesday, the revenue collection target for July was Tk 30,111 crore, but only Tk 27,247 crore was collected, resulting in a deficit of Tk 2,864 crore.
The NBR experienced significant revenue shortfalls in the last fiscal year, particularly in May and June, due to protests by its officials and employees demanding logical reforms in the revenue sector. These protests disrupted revenue collection activities. However, even after the protests ended, July’s revenue collection did not see the expected recovery.
Several NBR officials reported that a sense of fear regarding dismissals and transfers persists among employees, leading to reduced focus on revenue collection efforts.
Despite the shortfall, the NBR noted that July’s revenue collection was over Tk 4,000 crore higher than the Tk 21,916 crore collected in July 2024, a period marked by student and public protests and a few days of curfew.
According to NBR data, the highest revenue in July came from Value Added Tax (VAT), amounting to Tk 11,352 crore. Additionally, Tk 9,601 crore was collected from the customs sector, and Tk 6,294 crore from income tax.
