Debidwar, August 29, 2025: A courtyard meeting organized by the National Citizen Party (NCP) took place last night at Mohammadpur in Elahabad union of Debidwar upazila as part of the party’s initiative titled "Politics in the Courtyard." The event, held around 9:00 PM, aimed to bring politics closer to the people and address their concerns, according to the organizers.
Hasnat Abdullah, NCP’s chief organizer for the southern region, was the chief guest at the event. He emphasized the party’s mission to engage directly with citizens, stating, “Our primary goal is to go door-to-door to hear people’s problems, receive their demands, and determine future development plans.”
Calling for urgent election reforms, Hasnat criticized past electoral malpractices, saying, “For the past 16 years, we have seen midnight voting, daytime rigging, and even votes cast from the grave. Even referees have favored the Awami League. A change in election rules is essential to ensure the umpire remains impartial.”
Hasnat also condemned the culture of vote buying, warning, “Those who spend money to become MPs are the ones who later loot public wealth. Candidates who buy votes with illicit money destroy development projects worth crores. After winning through bribery, they profit through tenders and extortion.” He vowed zero tolerance for corruption, adding, “I grew up in Debidwar and live in a rented house. I will neither give nor take money through corruption. If I become corrupt, the people will reject me.”
Highlighting the importance of societal integrity, he said, “Honest people produce honest leaders. Corrupt people produce corrupt leaders. A single conscious individual can transform society. This generation rejects corruption, calls out wrongdoing, and ensures accountability.”
The meeting was presided over by Jamal Mohammad Kabir, NCP’s chief coordinator in Debidwar upazila. Other speakers included SM Saif Mostafiz, joint member secretary; Mahmuda Alam, joint chief organizer for the southern region; and several local leaders.
