The curtain has been raised on a new regional cricket tournament in Chattogram, organized by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The event was inaugurated by BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul, accompanied by board director and former captain Akram Khan and Habibul Bashar Sumon.
BCB officials stated that the tournament aims to spread cricket to every corner of the country. This initiative is expected to open doors of opportunity for district-level cricketers who have long been overlooked at the national level.
Habibul Bashar believes that a regional structure will ensure talents are no longer hidden. In his words, “Not everyone gets a chance to play in Dhaka. But with regional cricket, there will be local leagues and tournaments. This way, everyone can participate, and hidden talents will no longer remain hidden.”
Akram Khan, speaking about the tournament, said, “We’ve organized this tournament somewhat hurriedly. It’s neither in-season nor off-season, so it’s a bit of a risk. But we’ve paved the way for the future.”
Players like Mashrafe, Sakib, Tamim, and Mushfiqur have represented Bangladesh for a significant period. Now, BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul is focused on discovering the next generation of stars like Sakib, Tamim, or Mushfiqur. He said, “Cricket is centrally controlled, but if we can align it with regional cricket, it will spread further. Through decentralization, every district will create its own cricketing environment.”
He added, “The future Tamim, Sakib, Mushfiq, or Riyad are still in schools. It’s our responsibility to find them. That’s why we will reorganize school cricket in a new way.”
