A single pharmaceutical company spends up to 100 crore taka annually on promotional activities alone, revealed Dr. Md. Sayedur Rahman, Special Assistant to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, during the ‘Bangladesh Health Conclave–2025’ held at a hotel in the capital on Saturday (August 30).
He stated, “We have reviewed the audit reports of these companies. Some have recorded expenditures of 100 crore taka on advertisements. A single seminar at a five-star hotel costs over a crore, while gala nights can cost up to three crores. There are documented instances of groups of 40 people traveling abroad together.”
Addressing doctors, Sayedur Rahman said, “While there are 140,000 doctors in Bangladesh, perhaps 100,000 do not accept any such benefits. However, questions are being raised about the rest. Who bears the cost of dining at five-star hotels, foreign trips, or gala nights? Let me be clear—avoid getting entangled in controversies. We have all the information.”
On regulating the health sector, he remarked, “Regulation does not mean oppression. However, the health sector requires proper oversight. It’s unbelievable that until now, there was no law governing the establishment of government medical colleges. From now on, both public and private medical colleges will operate under a unified law.”
He further added, “Our goal is to ensure that the quality of healthcare in Kurigram matches that of Dhaka. Investments may vary, but there should be no compromise on quality. The health sector will allow reasonable profits, but substandard healthcare in the name of unchecked dividends is unacceptable.”
