Photo and Documentary Exhibition on July Uprising Opens in Canada

Ottawa, August 1, 2025 – The Bangladesh High Commission in Canada launched “July Beyond Borders,” a photo exhibition and documentary screening event, on Friday to commemorate the first anniversary of the 2024 July Uprising. Held at the High Commission Auditorium in Ottawa, the event drew members of the Bangladesh diaspora and Canadian guests, according to a press release. The exhibition will remain open until August 5.

The exhibition showcases a “powerful visual testimony” of a movement that began with student protests and evolved into a nationwide demand for justice, dignity, non-discrimination, and emancipation. What started as peaceful demonstrations against a job quota system in mid-2024 escalated into a broader uprising against state repression.

Guests at the opening were deeply moved by photos and footage depicting candlelit vigils, marches, and scenes of brutal crackdowns, with many recognizing the uprising as a pivotal moment in Bangladesh’s political history. High Commissioner Nahida Sobhan, speaking at the launch, said, “This exhibition is not just a tribute to the past—it is a reminder of the resilience and discrimination-free spirit that defines the people of Bangladesh, especially its youth.” “July Beyond Borders” pays tribute to the courage of a generation that stood firm and ensures their sacrifices remain etched in memory, transcending geographical boundaries, the press release stated.
