Students of Seven Colleges Issue Ultimatum for 'Dhaka Central University' Ordinance

Dhaka, August 6, 2025: Students from seven government colleges in the capital have given the government until August 26 to issue an ordinance for the establishment of the proposed "Dhaka Central University," threatening stricter protests if their demands are not met. On Wednesday, around 200 students blocked the Science Lab intersection at 1:00 PM to press their demands, lifting the blockade after 30 minutes to hold a press conference. The students expressed frustration over the government's delay in issuing the ordinance, despite recent progress in the university project. Abdur Rahman, a Dhaka College student and protest organizer, welcomed the government’s Monday announcement regarding the university's model and the initiation of the admission process, including plans for an entry test this month. However, he criticized the government for avoiding key issues, such as the ordinance, certificate issuance, and the university logo, raising concerns about potential delays. The students outlined a three-point demand: 1. Formation of a dedicated government committee to issue the "Dhaka Central University" ordinance. 2. Commencement of academic activities under the 2025-26 session with a fully functional administrative body, including a vice-chancellor and proctor. 3. Official transfer of current students from the seven colleges to the new university. Abdur Rahman warned that failure to issue the ordinance by August 26 would lead to intensified protests.
