Towhid Afridi Remanded for 5 Days in Yatrabari Murder Case

A Dhaka court has granted a 5-day remand for Towhid Afridi, son of MyTV Chairman Nasir Uddin Sathir, in connection with the murder of Asadul Haque Babu during the anti-discrimination movement in Yatrabari. The decision was made by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farjana Haque on Monday, August 25, following a hearing.

Towhid Afridi was brought to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka at around 2:25 PM and was initially held in the court’s lockup. The investigating officer, CID Inspector Khan Md. Erfan, requested a 7-day remand for interrogation. During the hearing, the prosecution argued for a maximum 7-day remand, while the defense lawyers sought to cancel the remand and requested bail. After hearing both sides, the court granted a 5-day remand for Towhid Afridi.

On Sunday night (August 24), a CID team arrested Towhid Afridi from Barisal. Earlier, on August 17, his father, Nasir Uddin, was arrested from Gulshan in Dhaka, and a court granted a 5-day remand for him the following day. According to case details, Asadul Haque Babu participated in the anti-discrimination movement on August 5 of the previous year in Yatrabari. Around 2:30 PM that day, he was shot in the chest and right side by the accused. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead by doctors. On August 30 of the same year, Asadul’s father, Joynal Abedin, filed a murder case at Yatrabari Police Station, naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 24 others as accused. In the case, Nasir Uddin is listed as the 22nd accused, and Towhid Afridi is the 11th accused.
