With the assistance of security guards at Bashundhara City Shopping Mall, two women were apprehended, while two others managed to escape.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Tejgaon Police Station has arrested two active members of a pickpocketing gang following an operation at Bashundhara City Shopping Mall in Dhaka.
According to a press release from DMP on Sunday, the arrests were made on Friday afternoon around 5:00 PM during a raid at the shopping mall under Tejgaon Police Station’s jurisdiction.
The arrested individuals are Juthi Akter Shrabonti, also known as Yuthi Akter Jyoti or Lima Akter (22), and Shahnaz Begum (42).
The press release stated that the suspects strategically bumped into a woman near the elevator on the seventh floor of Bashundhara City Shopping Mall, stealing 40,000 BDT from her vanity bag. When the victim grew suspicious and checked her bag, she confirmed the theft. Upon her and her husband’s outcry, the mall’s security guards intervened, leading to the detention of the two women. However, two other accomplices managed to escape.
Two additional female victims at the scene reported that they had lost 100,000 BDT and a gold ornament weighing 4.5 grams (valued at approximately 64,500 BDT), as well as 10,000 BDT, respectively. During initial questioning, the suspects confessed to the thefts.
With the assistance of Tejgaon Police Station and female police officers, 150,000 BDT in cash and the stolen gold ornament were recovered from Juthi Akter’s vanity bag.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Juthi Akter is the leader of an inter-district pickpocketing syndicate, with 14 cases filed against her in various police stations.
A case is being filed at Tejgaon Police Station, and legal action is underway, the press release added.
