BNP’s Fakhrul Alleges Efforts to Delay and Undermine National Election, Says Chief Adviser Assures February 2026 Polls

Dhaka, August 31, 2025 – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed concern on Sunday night, alleging that a certain group is working to make the upcoming national election “questionable and delayed.” He made the remarks after a meeting with Chief Adviser Yunus at the Jamuna State Guest House, where he was assured that the election would take place in February 2026 as scheduled.

Speaking to journalists, Fakhrul said, “The Chief Adviser called us to assure that the election will be held on time. There should be no doubt about this.” He emphasized that despite attempts by some quarters to create uncertainty around the polls, there is no possibility of a delay. “The Chief Adviser also confirmed the election will happen within the announced timeline,” he added. Condemning the recent attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad leader Nurul Haque Nur, Fakhrul described the incident as “very worrying” and called for a thorough investigation. “In the current political situation, a proper and deep investigation is needed. The government has already initiated a judicial investigation,” he stated. Responding to a question about the Jatiya Party, Fakhrul clarified that the issue was not discussed during the meeting with the Chief Adviser. Addressing allegations by Jamaat-e-Islami that a “blueprint” was being prepared for the election and that the Chief Adviser was showing weakness toward a political party following his meeting with BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman in London, Fakhrul dismissed the claims as “completely baseless.” He defended the Chief Adviser’s authority to engage with the country’s largest political party, stating, “The discussion was fruitful, and the people of Bangladesh are now assured that the election will be held in February.”
