Chittagong University Students Protest Demanding Resignation of Vice-Chancellor and Proctorial Body

Chittagong, September 1, 2025: Students at Chittagong University staged a protest on Monday evening in front of the administrative building, demanding the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Professor Muhammad Yeahia Akhter and the proctorial body. The demonstration was organized by various student organizations, including Bangladesh Chhatra Dal, which led a protest march on the university campus.

The students gathered in front of the administrative building, chanting slogans such as “We won’t let our brothers’ blood go in vain,” “Why is the administration silent when our brothers’ blood is shed?” and “Our brothers are in the ICU, but the administration is busy with recruitment boards.”

Earlier, around 6:30 PM, a rally was held at the Shahid Minar premises by Bangladesh Democratic Students’ Council, Revolutionary Students’ Alliance, Hill Students’ Council, and Islami Chhatra Majlis, where they raised a five-point demand. Subsequently, Chhatra Dal led a flash protest march from Zero Point to the administrative building, where students from the Shahid Minar rally also joined. The five demands included: the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor and proctorial body within 24 hours, swift legal action against local miscreants to ensure justice, establishment of a women-friendly specialized cell to ensure female students’ safety, the university bearing the medical expenses of injured students (including treatment abroad if necessary), and strengthening security at all university gates and key locations. Sudarshan Chakma, General Secretary of the Hill Students’ Council, said, “Even after a year in office, the Vice-Chancellor has failed to ensure student accommodation. Had proper housing been provided, this situation could have been avoided.” Joshod Zakir, President of Revolutionary Students’ Alliance, stated, “The administration has shifted the responsibility of security onto students instead of taking it themselves. Students are being blamed, which invalidates the Vice-Chancellor’s legitimacy to hold this position. Had timely action been taken that night, this situation wouldn’t have arisen.” Muntasir Mahmud, Convener of Bangladesh Democratic Students’ Council, remarked, “Around 1,500 students have been injured, with at least 10 in critical condition. The administration’s indifference during this crisis is unacceptable. If they cannot take responsibility, they must resign immediately.” Dhruba Barua, an organizer of the Democratic Students’ Council, alleged, “The administration has taken no effective steps to resolve students’ accommodation issues or ensure their safety. The Vice-Chancellor must resign.” Sajjad Hossain, Joint General Secretary of the University Chhatra Dal, said, “Despite so many students being injured, the administration shows no remorse. This is shameful. We demand their resignation.”
The protests stem from a clash that began late Saturday night around 12:15 AM in Jobra village when a dormitory security guard allegedly assaulted a female student. The incident sparked violence that continued until 3:30 AM. On Sunday afternoon, another clash occurred, injuring at least 200 students with machetes, bricks, and iron rods, and 10 to 15 locals. Classes and exams have been suspended for two days, and the army has been deployed on campus. The Section 144 imposed by the upazila administration will remain in effect until midnight on Tuesday
