Election Commission Declines Responsibility for CCTV Camera Installation at Polling Stations

The Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh has informed the home ministry that it will not take responsibility for installing CCTV cameras at polling stations or providing body-worn cameras for police personnel during the upcoming 13th parliamentary election, scheduled for early February 2026.

In a letter sent to the home ministry on Monday, 8 September, the EC clarified that it has no role in the installation of CCTV cameras at polling centres or equipping police with body-worn cameras. This follows a meeting on 6 August, chaired by Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, where decisions were made to enhance election monitoring through CCTV cameras at polling stations and body-worn cameras for law enforcement.

The meeting assigned the responsibility for implementing these measures to either the EC or the police. However, the EC distanced itself from the task, stating in its letter, “With reference to agenda item 9 of the minutes of the August 6 meeting on logistical issues and action plan of law enforcement agencies, the Commission has decided that there is no responsibility on its part regarding CCTV cameras and body-worn cameras.” Election Commissioner Brig Gen (Retd) Abdul Fazal Md Sanaullah had earlier indicated to reporters that the EC was not considering the use of CCTV cameras in the election process. On 7 August, he stated that the Commission did not find the use of CCTV cameras during elections to be rational.
