Inauguration of Robotic Rehabilitation Center at Bangladesh Medical University’s Super Specialized Hospital

The use of artificial intelligence (AI)-based robots in healthcare has officially begun in Bangladesh. On Sunday morning, the Robotic Rehabilitation Center was inaugurated at the Super Specialized Hospital of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) in Dhaka. The facility was launched by Health Advisor Nurjahan Begum, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor Prof. Dr. Md. Sayedur Rahman, and China’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen. The establishment of this state-of-the-art center was supported by the Chinese government.

Other notable attendees included Md. Saidur Rahman, Secretary of the Health Services Division of the Health Ministry, and Prof. Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam, Vice-Chancellor of BMU.

During the inauguration ceremony, Health Advisor Nurjahan Begum emphasized that the center should not only serve as a place for treatment but also as a hub for realizing greater aspirations. Expressing gratitude to the Chinese government, she noted that China provided 57 robots and trained BMU’s doctors and healthcare workers to operate them. She expressed hope that China would continue to support efforts to make the center sustainable and long-lasting. Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen highlighted China’s contributions to Bangladesh’s health sector, stating that 24 BMU staff members were trained to operate the robots. He added that China has established a “green channel” for Bangladeshi citizens to access medical treatment, health check-ups, and diagnostics in Chinese hospitals. It is expected that by December, 4,000 to 5,000 Bangladeshis will travel to China for medical purposes. The center is equipped with 57 robots, 22 of which are AI-based. These robots will provide precise physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation, and long-term care for patients with conditions such as stroke, spinal injuries, and injuries from road accidents or the July protests. Specialized robots are available to address issues related to hands, legs, or stiffened joints, ensuring comprehensive care for paralysis patients. Those injured in the July protests will receive free services, while general patients will access affordable care. Prof. Dr. Md. Sayedur Rahman, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor, stressed the need to transform BMU into a hub for technology transfer and a leading institution for adopting cutting-edge medical technologies.
Md. Saidur Rahman, Secretary of the Health Services Division, thanked the Chinese government for their support, noting that China has consistently stood by Bangladesh in times of need
