In a shocking incident in Gaibandha’s Saghata, a newlywed 18-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped the day after her marriage, leading to the arrest of her husband, Asif Miah, and six others by the police.
On Saturday (August 30) afternoon, the husband was sent to jail through the Gaibandha Women and Children Repression Prevention Court. Asif Miah, son of Ashadul Islam from Osmanerpara village in Kamalerpara Union, was among the seven detained following a police raid on Friday afternoon.
The incident occurred on Thursday night at Asif’s residence in Osmanerpara village, Kamalerpara Union, Saghata Upazila. According to local sources, Asif Miah married the daughter of Nazim Uddin from Bhaggarib village, Kochashahar Union, Gobindaganj Upazila, on Wednesday night with a dowry of Tk 2.3 lakh. The following night, Asif allegedly brought six friends to the house, where the gang rape took place. The victim informed her relatives about the incident during a post-wedding reception on Friday afternoon.
The victim was initially admitted to Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. On Friday night, the victim’s brother filed a complaint at Saghata Police Station, naming Asif and four to five unidentified individuals.
Dr. Fahad Al Asad, Residential Medical Officer at Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that the victim was brought to the hospital on Friday afternoon with signs of physical assault and was referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Saghata Police Station Officer-in-Charge Badsha Alam confirmed the incident, stating that the seven individuals, including Asif, were detained for questioning. However, the court found insufficient evidence to prove the involvement of the six others in the alleged sedative-induced rape and released them, sending only Asif to jail. The court ordered further investigation to identify the true culprits and directed that those released be re-arrested if found guilty.
