The administration of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia has issued a directive requiring prior permission for organizing any events, including meetings, seminars, human chains, or other programs on campus. The notice, signed by Student Advisor Professor Dr. Obaidul Islam, was released on Wednesday (September 10, 2025).
This new policy has triggered widespread discontent among students, who have taken to social media to criticize the university administration. Political student organizations have also condemned the decision, labeling it as absurd and oppressive.
The notice states that no gatherings, human chains, or programs can be held on campus under the banner of any organization or association not registered with the Student Advisor's Office. To register, organizations must submit a list of their advisory council, constitution, and complete committee details (with signatures from the advisory council) to the Student Advisor's Office.
Students expressed their frustration on social media, stating, "A university is a place for free thought and expression, not a military camp where permission is needed for protests, meetings, or seminars. No one can suppress students' voices or run the campus by stifling protests. The right to protest and organize is ours. Remember, the July uprising was not led by any registered organization."
Ahmad Galib, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Chhatra Union, remarked, "Suppressing social and protest activities signals authoritarian behavior and reflects the administration’s shortsightedness. Hindering any group’s activities obstructs the development of a healthy campus culture."
Mahmudul Hasan, President of Islami Chhatra Shibir, said, "Anyone has the right to hold meetings or seminars. Even a single individual should be given space to protest. Movements don’t happen with permission. The administration’s demand is illogical and baseless."
Sahed Ahmed, Convener of Chhatra Dal, added, "Students have the right to hold any peaceful gatherings or protests at the university. We support all forms of peaceful programs."
Multiple attempts to contact Professor Dr. Obaidul Islam, the Student Advisor, were unsuccessful as he did not answer calls or respond to text messages.
