Pakistan Agrees to Discuss Returning Bangladesh’s Assets and Apologizing for 1971 Genocide
Diplomatic relations between Dhaka and Islamabad have taken a significant step forward as Pakistan has agreed to discuss the return of Bangladesh’s pre-1971 assets and issue a formal apology for the atrocities committed during the 1971 Liberation War.
Following the Foreign Office Consultation (FOC) held in Dhaka on April 17, Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin stated that the government has demanded $4.52 billion from Pakistan, covering financial claims related to pre-1971 assets, including unpaid provident funds and foreign aid. Additionally, discussions were held regarding the repatriation of 325,000 stranded Pakistanis still residing in Bangladesh.
Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch described the meeting as highly productive and expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral ties. Both nations have agreed to enhance economic and trade relations, with plans to launch direct flights between Bangladesh and Pakistan soon.
This meeting marks the first high-level diplomatic engagement in 15 years, signaling a potential shift toward resolving long-standing historical grievances and fostering improved relations between the two South Asian nations.
