For the first time in over a decade, Bangladesh and Pakistan's foreign secretaries have convened in Dhaka for diplomatic talks. The meeting, held at the State Guest House Padma on Thursday (April 17), commenced at 10:30 AM and is set to continue until 1:00 PM.
Pakistan's delegation is led by Foreign Secretary Amna Baluch, while Bangladesh's side is represented by Foreign Secretary Md. Jasim Uddin. The primary agenda of the meeting is to rejuvenate bilateral diplomatic relations and identify new areas of cooperation.
International relations analysts view this dialogue positively, stating that both nations should focus on expanding trade relations. Additionally, unresolved issues from 1971 may also surface during discussions.
After the meeting, Amna Baluch is scheduled to meet Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain and later hold a courtesy meeting with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
The last foreign secretary-level meeting between Bangladesh and Pakistan took place in Islamabad in 2010, whereas the most recent Economic Commission meeting at the ministerial level was held back in 2005.
Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government last year on August 5, Pakistan has been striving to strengthen its relations with Bangladesh. The interim government of Bangladesh has also signaled its intent to normalize relations. Officials indicate that today’s meeting will include proposals to reinforce bilateral ties.
