Lakshmipur, May 25, 2025 – In an incident in Kamalnagar, Lakshmipur, nine individuals have been arrested for allegedly snatching Awami League leader Ashraf Uddin Rajon Raju, who was handcuffed, from police custody. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Pradeep Chandra Sheel, involved in the incident, has been suspended and attached to the Police Lines.
Kamalnagar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Touhidul Islam confirmed the development on Sunday afternoon. The arrested individuals were sent to Lakshmipur jail through a court order on Sunday. On Saturday night, ASI Pradeep filed a case against 26 named and 150 unidentified persons for obstructing police duties and snatching the accused. Following the case, police conducted raids in Charthika and other areas of Charkadira Union, arresting the suspects.
The arrested individuals are Trikot Chandra Das, Sanjit Chandra Das, Sembhu Chandra Das, Md. Milion, Abdur Rahim, Nur Alam, Abbas Uddin, Helal Uddin, and Ira Das, all from South Charkadira village.
According to locals, Raju, a former chairman of Charkadira Union Parishad and vice-president of Kamalnagar Upazila Awami League, was detained by ASI Pradeep on Saturday afternoon in Charthika village. As news spread, hundreds of local men and women gathered, surrounded the police, and chanted slogans in support of Raju. Eventually, they forcibly freed him, still handcuffed, from police custody. OC Touhidul Islam arrived at the scene, urged the agitated crowd to remain calm, and left with the police personnel.
Police stated that they were conducting an operation to apprehend drug traffickers when Raju was detained. However, an agitated mob snatched him from custody. A case was filed, leading to the arrest of nine individuals. Locals, on condition of anonymity, revealed that a relative of Raju, JSD youth leader Khokon, later recovered the handcuffs and returned them to the police.
OC Touhidul Islam said the arrested individuals misled locals to create resistance against Raju’s arrest. They were sent to jail following a court order. ASI Pradeep has been suspended for his role in the incident, though the OC was unaware of any investigation committee being formed. Assistant Superintendent of Police (Ramgati Circle) Mohammad Rakibul Hasan confirmed that the mob snatched Raju, but the handcuffs were later returned by locals. Police operations to apprehend Raju are ongoing.
