Dhaka, May 27, 2025 – Bangladesh has taken a significant step toward enhancing its maritime and economic capabilities by signing an agreement with Japanese firms Penta-Ocean Construction Co. Ltd. and Toyo Corporation to construct the country’s first deep-sea port at Matarbari.
The project, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is poised to transform the region into a strategic economic corridor.
The Matarbari Deep-Sea Port is a cornerstone of the Moheshkhali-Matarbari Integrated Infrastructure Development Initiative (MMIDI), a joint venture between Bangladesh and Japan. The initiative aims to bolster regional connectivity, energy security, and industrial growth by developing robust supply chains and infrastructure. The port is expected to unlock significant economic potential, fostering trade and investment opportunities in the region.
A high-level meeting, chaired by Chief Adviser’s Principal Secretary Md. Siraj Uddin Mia, reviewed the progress of MMIDI projects. Key attendees included SDG Affairs Principal Coordinator Lamia Morshed and secretaries from the Ministries of Road Transport, Shipping, Energy, Power, and Local Government. Sarwar Alam, Director General of the MMIDI Cell, presented a detailed overview of ongoing projects under the initiative.
The MMIDI is set to position the region as a vital economic hub, aligning with Bangladesh’s vision for sustainable development and regional integration.
