Dhaka, May 22, 2025 – Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has described the High Court’s ruling on the issue of administering the oath to Ishraq Hossain as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) as a “victory for the people.”
Speaking over the phone from Bangkok, where he is undergoing medical treatment, Fakhrul expressed his reaction to the media following the High Court’s dismissal of a writ petition that sought to prevent Ishraq Hossain from taking the oath.
The BNP leader urged the Local Government Ministry to promptly arrange for Ishraq Hossain’s oath-taking, emphasizing the need to avoid further complications. “I hope the ministry will not create any more obstacles and will swiftly facilitate Ishraq Hossain’s oath-taking, ensuring the situation is handled smoothly,” Fakhrul said. He also called on BNP activists, who have been staging protests over the issue in recent days, to refrain from blocking roads.
Fakhrul has been in Bangkok since May 14, 2025, for a surgical procedure on his eye. On May 15, he successfully underwent surgery on his left eye at Bangkok Rutnin Eye Hospital and is currently under close medical observation.
The court’s decision marks a significant development in the ongoing political discourse surrounding the DSCC mayoral position, with Fakhrul’s remarks underscoring the BNP’s stance on ensuring a fair and expeditious process.
