Dhaka, May 24, 2025 – Sarjis Alam, the chief organizer of the National Citizen’s Party (NCP) for the northern region, has been served a legal notice for allegedly making derogatory comments about the High Court on social media. The notice follows a Facebook post by Alam, which was deemed contemptuous after the High Court dismissed a writ petition regarding the oath-taking of BNP leader Ishraq Hossain as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
On Saturday, May 24, Supreme Court lawyer Md. Jasim Uddin issued the notice, demanding that Alam submit a written unconditional apology to the Chief Justice through the Supreme Court’s Registrar General. Additionally, Alam has been asked to issue a public apology to the nation within two hours through a press conference. Failure to comply will result in a contempt of court case against him, according to the notice.
The controversy stems from a High Court ruling on May 22, where a bench comprising Justice Md. Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury rejected a writ seeking to prevent Ishraq Hossain from taking the oath as DSCC mayor. Following the verdict, Alam posted on his verified Facebook account at 11:49 AM, stating, “If the High Court’s verdict can be influenced by creating a mob, then what is the need for this High Court?”
The legal notice accuses Alam of undermining the dignity of the High Court, prompting swift action from the legal community to address the alleged contempt.
