Dhaka, May 8, 2025 :The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is set to initiate a greening program along the banks of 33 canals and lakes in Dhaka to combat encroachment and pollution.
DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz announced that various volunteer organizations will collaborate to plant trees and restore the ecological health of these water bodies, with a detailed action plan to be finalized within the next week.
Speaking at a meeting with volunteer organizations at the Gulshan Nagar Bhaban on Thursday, May 8, Ejaz emphasized the urgency of the initiative. Representatives from volunteer groups presented reports on the current state of the canals, based on field inspections, and proposed actionable plans to address the issues.
Based on the volunteers’ findings, the DNCC administrator pledged to conduct swift operations to address irregularities at identified locations. To prevent household waste from being dumped into canals, DNCC will work with volunteers to raise public awareness in targeted areas. Ejaz also directed relevant departments to promptly remove household waste from canal banks and create a suitable environment for tree plantation.
In a bid to reduce environmental degradation, the DNCC administrator issued instructions to eliminate the use of harmful plastic items, such as plastic boxes and water bottles, at all DNCC events and hospitality arrangements.
The volunteer organizations partnering with DNCC for this initiative include Brighters, Climate Frontier, U Can, AB Foundation, Renew Earth, Youth Environment and Development Organization, Green Voice, Community Town Federation, Eco Network Global, and Human Society Foundation.
The meeting was attended by DNCC’s Chief Waste Management Officer, Commodore ABM Samsul Alam, along with other DNCC officials. This initiative marks a significant step toward restoring Dhaka’s canals and lakes, enhancing the city’s environmental sustainability.
