Dhaka, June 4, 2025D : Dhaka, June 4, 2025 – The United Nations considers the ban on the Awami League a political decision by the Bangladesh government, based on the country's current situation. This stance was articulated by UN Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis during a discussion titled ‘DCAB Talk’ at the National Press Club on Wednesday morning, organized by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB).
Addressing a question about the UN Human Rights Commission’s report on the human rights situation in Bangladesh during July and August, which emphasized inclusive elections, Lewis stated that citizens from all sections of society—regardless of gender or ethnicity—should have the right to vote. She noted that the government’s decision to ban the Awami League was a political one, shaped by the country’s circumstances. The UN, she added, interprets ‘inclusive’ as ensuring participation of all people in the country. Lewis also expressed the UN’s readiness to provide technical support for the upcoming national election, though she clarified that the timing of the election would be determined by the Bangladesh government and its people.
When asked about the prioritization of state reforms versus elections, Lewis emphasized that this decision lies with the people of Bangladesh. Describing Bangladesh as an important partner of the UN, she expressed hope for deeper engagement in the future.
On the issue of establishing a humanitarian corridor in Rakhine, Lewis said it depends on the agreement between the governments of Bangladesh and Myanmar. If both countries consent, the UN would extend its cooperation but would not take any unilateral decision on the matter.
Lewis also revealed that the establishment of a UN Human Rights Office in Dhaka is nearly finalized.
The event was attended by DCAB President AKM Moinuddin and General Secretary Arifuzzaman Mamun, who also delivered remarks.
