Court Grants Bail to Expelled Jamaat Activist Accused of Assaulting Woman in Chittagong

Chittagong, June 4, 2025: A Chittagong court has granted bail to Akash Chowdhury, an expelled activist of Jamaat-e-Islami, who was accused of assaulting a woman during a protest. The bail was approved on the condition that Chowdhury must appear in court daily starting from June 15.

On Wednesday, Chittagong’s First Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Bakkar Siddique granted the bail after a hearing. The decision was confirmed by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, Mofiz Uddin.
The incident occurred on May 28, when members of the “Anti-Shahbag Movement” attacked a pre-scheduled program organized by the Democratic Student Alliance in protest of the acquittal of Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam, who was previously sentenced to death for crimes against humanity during the Liberation War. During the clash, police arrested two individuals, including a student, and filed a case under the Speedy Trial Act.
A 15-second viral video from the incident showed Chowdhury kicking a woman while evading police presence near the Chittagong Independent University campus, adjacent to the Press Club. The video sparked widespread outrage on social media, leading to his expulsion from Jamaat-e-Islami, which acknowledged him as their activist. On Sunday, police arrested Chowdhury in the Laldighi field area of Kotwali and sent him to jail through the Court.
