Dhaka, June 5, 2025: As Eid-ul-Adha approaches, emphasis has been placed on ensuring fair prices for qurbani hides, preventing environmental pollution, and promoting the use of locally bred livestock. According to the Department of Livestock Services, the hide industry could generate approximately BDT 729 crore from cattle and buffalo hides and BDT 58 crore from goat and sheep hides, totaling BDT 787 crore in revenue. However, securing fair prices and proper management of hides remains a persistent challenge. To address this, it is crucial to align domestic hide prices with international market rates and enforce their implementation rigorously.
English Report: Ensuring Fair Value for Qurbani Hides and Environmental Protection
On June 3, Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin urged scholars of Qawmi madrasas to play a responsible role in the proper collection, preservation, and distribution of hides. He stated, “Hides are a vital national resource. Proper management can significantly contribute to the economy.” He further noted that the economic value of hides rightfully belongs to the poor, orphans, and the destitute, emphasizing the need for their proper utilization.
Environmental protection during Eid-ul-Adha is equally critical. Government guidelines mandate slaughtering animals in designated areas, burying waste such as blood and offal in pits, and cleaning slaughter sites with bleaching powder and lime to prevent pollution. Additionally, the use of locally bred livestock has been prioritized. In Chattogram, 8,60,882 livestock were produced locally this year, an increase of 8,523 compared to last year. Despite a shortfall of 35,387 animals against demand, this gap will be met through supplies from other regions.
Using local livestock is not only economically beneficial but also supports environmental sustainability and public health by reducing the risks associated with unhealthy imported animals. Local farmers benefit from increased income, and the domestic economy is strengthened. The collective efforts of the government, local administration, religious leaders, and citizens can transform the hide industry into a year-round, employment-generating, and foreign exchange-earning sector. Ensuring proper hide preservation and fair pricing is a shared responsibility to protect this vital industry and boost the nation’s economy.
