Mohammad Sabuj, alias Barma Sabuj (36), a notorious criminal known as a ‘top terrorist,’ was arrested by police in Chattogram’s Bayezid Bostami area. He faces around 35 cases related to murder, extortion, land grabbing, and violations of the Arms Act. The arrest took place during a late-night operation in the Hillview area on Saturday (June 28), as confirmed by Mohammad Kamruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bayezid Bostami Police Station, on Sunday (June 29).
During the operation, two of Sabuj’s associates, Suman Khan (38) and Mohammad Joni (31), were also detained. According to police, Barma Sabuj has been involved in criminal activities across Bayezid, Panchlaish, and Khulshi areas for years. Leading an organized gang, he engaged in extorting money from construction sites, land grabbing, and establishing dominance under political patronage. Sabuj was previously arrested on November 25 last year in the Kuaish area of Hathazari. After serving time in jail, he was released on bail and resumed his criminal activities. Police revealed that four of Sabuj’s five brothers are also implicated in multiple cases. His elder brother Samshur has 12 cases, Saiful has 20, and Fahim has one case against them. Although his younger brother Shahin has no recorded cases, local sources claim he associates with his criminal siblings. OC Mohammad Kamruzzaman stated that on the night of June 27, a gang led by Barma Sabuj attacked the residence of Mohammad Yusuf in Bayezid. Brandishing firearms and local weapons, they intimidated residents and demanded Tk 10 lakh in extortion money. Following a case filed at the police station the next day, Sabuj was arrested in a raid that night.
