Dhaka, June 08, 2025 : Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to the interim government, is set to embark on a four-day visit to the United Kingdom tomorrow, Monday. During this visit, former UK City Minister and British MP Tulip Siddiq has expressed her desire to meet with him. To this end, she has sent a letter to Dr. Yunus, according to a report by The Guardian.
In her letter, Tulip Siddiq stated that she aims to address and clarify “misunderstandings” regarding what she describes as “politically motivated” allegations made by Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). She wrote, “If we have the opportunity to meet during your visit to London, it would allow me to address questions related to my aunt, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This meeting could help resolve misunderstandings created by the ACC.”
Siddiq further noted that she is a British citizen born in London and has been the MP for Hampstead and Highgate for the past decade. While she has an emotional attachment to Bangladesh, she neither resides there nor has any business interests in the country. She alleged that her legal team’s attempts to contact the ACC have been unsuccessful, and the commission has been sending documents to an “unknown address” in Dhaka. She added that every step of this “fabricated investigation” is being leaked to the media, while no formal communication has been made with her legal team.
Tulip Siddiq is the niece of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The ACC has accused her and her mother of illegally obtaining a 7,200-square-foot plot through abuse of power during Hasina’s tenure. Siddiq has denied these allegations, with her legal team labeling them as “baseless and politically motivated.” She stated that neither she nor her lawyers have been formally contacted by the ACC regarding these claims.
Notably, Sheikh Hasina, Siddiq’s aunt, is currently facing a trial in absentia for alleged crimes against humanity.
