Landslide Blocks Sajek Road, Stranding Tourist Vehicles and Others

A landslide has completely blocked the Baghaihat-Sajek road in the Nandaram area of Sajek Union, Baghaichhari Upazila, Rangamati, halting all vehicular movement since early Thursday morning. The incident, triggered by heavy overnight rainfall, has left numerous vehicles, including those carrying tourists, stranded on both sides of the road.

Local residents reported that the landslide occurred due to continuous heavy rain the previous night, which had already disrupted traffic. When the rain subsided at dawn and vehicles attempted to resume travel, the landslide was discovered. Local resident Sujit Chakma told Prothom Alo, “We didn’t notice the landslide at night. It came to our attention in the morning when vehicles started moving.”

The Fire Service team from Sajek reached the site after the incident was reported but could not clear the debris due to the lack of an excavator. Mohammad Abdul Mannan, Acting Assistant Director of Rangamati Fire Service, stated, “We don’t have the equipment to remove the soil, so we’re unable to clear the road.” Sajek Union Parishad Chairman Atulal Chakma told Prothom Alo that the amount of debris on the road cannot be cleared manually. “Without an excavator, nothing can be done. We’ve informed the Roads and Highways Department, but it’s uncertain when they will start the rescue operation. If delayed, the road may remain blocked all day.” Sajek Valley, a popular tourist destination, sees regular traffic with tourist vehicles traveling from Baghaihat to Ruilui Valley until 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM daily. However, the road closure has disrupted this schedule, halting tourist movement to and from Sajek. Those already in Sajek face uncertainty about returning.
Suparna Debbarma, President of the Sajek Resort-Cottage Owners’ Association, told Prothom Alo that around 50 motorcycles and 70–80 tourist vehicles, scheduled to leave Sajek around 10:30 AM, are stranded due to the landslide.
