Students Protest at Dhaka City College on Holiday, Demand Principal’s Resignation

Students Announce Boycott of Classes, Exams, and Academic Activities Until Demands Are Met
On Friday, a holiday, students of Dhaka City College staged a protest on campus, continuing their ongoing movement to demand the resignation of the current principal.

On July 18, 2025, over a hundred students from the 25th and 26th batches gathered in front of the college’s main gate from the morning to voice their demands. They raised slogans against the “self-proclaimed” principal’s authoritarian governance and called for dismantling the administrative syndicate they claim is involved in irregularities.

The students accused Principal Niamul Haque of running the college with an autocratic mindset, alleging that a group close to him is engaged in various administrative malpractices. They vowed to boycott classes, internal exams, fee payments, and all academic activities until a proper investigation into incidents involving injured students is conducted and those responsible are punished. The protesting students emphasized that they are holding a peaceful movement for just demands, but the college administration has restricted their access by locking the gates, which they called a violation of their democratic rights. Raihan Hossain, a student from the 26th HSC batch, told the media, “We want to attend classes and take exams, but the dictatorial behavior of a self-proclaimed principal is worsening the college environment daily. No investigation has been conducted into the injuries of our classmates. We will accept nothing less than the principal’s resignation.” Tasnima Akter, a student from the 25th batch, added, “Not only us, but students from previous batches have also raised complaints against the administration. However, the administration has consistently ignored them. This time, we won’t let that happen. We will continue our movement and disregard any notices from the administration, as they are not working in the interest of students. By locking the gates, they are trying to suppress our voices. We will remain united and continue the movement until our demands are met.” Law enforcement personnel were deployed around the college, maintaining a vigilant presence. While no untoward incidents have occurred so far, tension prevails on campus.
The unrest began following an incident on July 8, when two students, Mehedi Hasan Tanim and Apu, were injured during a confrontation involving teachers and students. Since then, the college atmosphere has remained volatile. The administration has repeatedly postponed internal exams and admission processes. However, no official or written statement has been issued by the college authorities as of yet.
