Tazia Procession Held in Capital Under Tight Security

Under stringent security measures by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), the Tazia procession organized by the Shia community to mark the holy day of Ashura was successfully held in Dhaka.

On Sunday (July 6), Deputy Commissioner (DC) of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, confirmed the information. He stated that the main mourning procession began at 10 a.m. from Hosseini Dalan in Old Dhaka. Thousands of members from the Shia community, walking barefoot and chanting “Hay Hossein, Hay Hossein” while beating their chests, participated in the procession. The procession passed through Bokshi Bazar Lane, Lalbagh, Shahid Mazar Road, Azimpur, Nilkhet, Mirpur Road, Dhaka College, Science Lab, Dhanmondi residential area, BGB Gate No. 4, and Sat Masjid Road, concluding at the symbolic “Karbala” site by the Dhanmondi Lake. Prior to the event, the DMP had banned carrying sharp objects such as knives, scissors, spears, lances, swords, sticks, and the use of fireworks or firecrackers during the procession to ensure its smooth execution. The 10th of Muharram, or the holy day of Ashura, is a profoundly significant and mournful day for Muslims worldwide. The Shia community observes this day with various rituals, with the Tazia procession being a prominent tradition. The historic Hosseini Dalan Imambara in Lalbagh, Old Dhaka, along with the Baro Katara Imambara and other Shia communities in Dhaka, organize various events and traditional mourning processions to commemorate the occasion.
