BNP Welcomes February 2026 Election Announcement: Mirza Fakhrul

Dhaka, August 6, 2025: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has welcomed the announcement to hold the next national election in February 2026, viewing it as a crucial step toward restoring democracy in Bangladesh, said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday.

Speaking at a press conference at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office, Fakhrul said the decision, made after a meeting between BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus in London, would help resolve the ongoing political stalemate and facilitate a democratic transition. “BNP believes this historic announcement will pave the way for democracy,” he stated.

Fakhrul urged the government and the Election Commission to ensure a free, fair, and impartial election acceptable to all. He called on political parties and citizens to work together to make the election successful and strengthen democratic institutions. Expressing gratitude to Professor Yunus, the Advisory Council, and others involved, Fakhrul acknowledged their efforts to advance democracy despite challenges over the past year. He also welcomed the ‘July Proclamation’ announced by Yunus on Tuesday, stating it marks the beginning of a new democratic Bangladesh built on equality, human values, and justice.
Fakhrul paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives or were injured in the democratic struggle, urging the government to provide rehabilitation and medical support for victims’ families. He also thanked Tarique Rahman for leading the democratic movement over the past eight years and expressed gratitude to students, farmers, workers, and others who participated in the struggle.
