Dhaka, August 21, 2025 – Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus handed over the deed for a three-katha plot in Purbachal to Mahir Sarowar Megh, the son of slain journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, on Thursday afternoon at the state guest house Yamuna in Dhaka.
Sagar Sarowar had applied for the plot in 2004 and received its allocation in 2005. Despite full payment in 2009, the previous Awami League government failed to transfer the plot to his family. The current owners, by inheritance, are Sagar’s mother, Saleha Monir, and his son, Mahir Sarowar Megh.
During the deed handover ceremony, Professor Yunus inquired about the progress of the investigation into the Sagar-Runi murder case. He expressed concern over the prolonged delays, stating that such delays create negative perceptions among the public and lead to disillusionment with the legal system. He directed the relevant authorities to expedite the investigation into this high-profile case.
Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, who was present, noted that the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has found that prolonged delays have led to the destruction of many pieces of evidence. During the event, Megh gifted the Chief Adviser a jersey and a bag he designed. Also present were Advisers Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, Farida Akhter, and Syeda Rizwana Hasan, RAJUK Chairman Engineer Md. Riazul Islam, and Meherun Runi’s brother Nowajesh Alam Roman.
On February 11, 2012, Sagar Sarowar, news editor of Maasranga Television, and Meherun Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were murdered in their rented apartment in West Rajabazar, Dhaka. Runi’s brother, Nowsher Alam Roman, filed a murder case at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station.
