Newborn Stolen from Narsingdi Hospital Recovered After 12 Hours, Woman Arrested

Police have recovered a newborn stolen from a hospital in Narsingdi within 12 hours and arrested a woman involved in the incident. The recovered newborn has been reunited with its mother, Mithila Akter.

The incident occurred at a private hospital named National Health Care in Narsingdi town. The stolen newborn, the second child of Md. Sharif and Mithila Akter from Baraihalgi in Putia Union, Shibpur Upazila, was recovered along with the arrest of the suspect.

The arrested woman, Fatema Begum (40), is the wife of Sirajul Islam from Kumar Tek area in Shibpur Upazila. She was apprehended, and the newborn was rescued from the Morjal area of Raipura Upazila around 2:00 AM on Sunday. The theft took place around 2:00 PM on the same day from a hospital cabin. According to the police and the newborn’s family, Mithila Akter, who was pregnant, visited Narsingdi District Hospital on Saturday afternoon for a consultation. Accompanied by relatives, she was advised by the attending doctor to undergo a cesarean section. As they left the hospital, a broker approached them, offering to arrange the operation at a lower cost at the nearby National Health Care hospital. That evening, around 8:00 PM, Mithila gave birth to a baby boy. Both mother and child were kept under observation in a hospital cabin. Around 11:00 AM on Sunday, Fatema Begum visited the hospital and entered the cabin, claiming to be a relative of another patient scheduled for a cesarean. She spent some time in the cabin, interacting with the family. At around 2:00 PM, seizing an opportunity, she took the newborn and fled. Upon receiving the report, Narsingdi Model Police Station officers visited the hospital, spoke with the family and hospital authorities, and reviewed CCTV footage from the hospital and surrounding areas to identify the suspect. A police operation led to Fatema’s arrest and the newborn’s recovery from a house in Morjal, Raipura, around 2:00 AM. The hospital’s managing director, Mojibur Rahman, stated that the woman had introduced herself as a patient’s relative and spent considerable time with the family, even holding the baby. It was only after the theft that they realized she was not a relative. Narsingdi Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Emdadul Haque said that during initial questioning, Fatema revealed that her family had no male child, and her husband had been pressuring her. This led her to steal the newborn.
