Dhaka, August 27, 2025: Clashes broke out between police and engineering students protesting in front of the InterContinental Hotel in Shahbag, Dhaka, over a three-point demand, creating a tense atmosphere in the area. The confrontations occurred on Wednesday afternoon, leading to a volatile situation at the InterContinental intersection.
Around 2:30 PM, the protesting students gathered at the hotel’s outer gate, while police took positions at the intersection. Earlier, as part of their pre-announced “Long March to Dhaka” program, the students occupied Shahbag at 11:00 AM to press their demands. At around 1:30 PM, as they marched toward the chief advisor’s residence, Yamuna, police used sound grenades and tear gas to disperse the crowd. At least 10 students and several police officers were injured in the clashes.
The students’ demands include allowing diploma engineers to use the title “engineer” before their names, promoting diploma engineers to the 9th grade, and prioritizing graduate engineers for 10th-grade job entries.
