Since the onset of Israel’s war in Gaza on October 7, 2023, at least 21,000 Palestinian children have been disabled, according to a report by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities released on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
The UN committee stated that over the nearly two years since the war began, approximately 40,500 children have suffered “war-related injuries,” with more than half of them becoming disabled.
The committee’s review of the situation in the Palestinian territory highlighted that evacuation orders issued by Israeli forces during attacks often failed to reach individuals with hearing or visual impairments.
Disabled individuals were forced to flee in unsafe and degrading conditions, such as crawling through sand or mud without assistance due to the hostile environment.
The committee further noted that the restriction of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip has disproportionately impacted disabled individuals. Around 83% of disabled persons have lost their assistive devices, and most are unable to afford alternatives, such as donkey carts, to compensate for their loss.
