Jessore, May 14, 2025: A cheque distribution ceremony for individuals injured during the July Mass Uprising turned chaotic in Jessore on Wednesday (May 14) due to protests over alleged irregularities in the beneficiary list. The event, held at the Jessore District Administrator’s office, was disrupted by students from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, who raised objections to the inclusion of “fake” names in the list of recipients.
According to district administration sources, the ceremony was organized to distribute cheques of BDT 100,000 each to 66 individuals listed under the ‘C’ category of July warriors in Jessore. During the event, student leaders criticized inconsistencies in the compilation of the list of martyrs and injured from the uprising. They questioned whether all victims of the widely discussed “Jabir Tragedy” in the city would be included in the martyrs’ list and alleged nepotism and negligence in preparing the list of injured.
Maruf Hasan Sukarna, Joint Member Secretary of Jessore’s Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, stated, “The list includes someone named Nur Islam as injured, but he was never hurt. At least 15 to 20 such individuals, who were not involved in the movement, have been included. This is a betrayal of the July Revolution.”
Abdullah Al Mamun Likhon, Chief Organizer of the movement, added, “Of the 66 listed as injured in Jessore, many were not hurt during the movement. We cannot accept them as July warriors. The list was tainted by favoritism. We demand immediate verification to identify genuine warriors.”
Rashed Khan, Convener of the movement, remarked, “Almost all of us who participated in the movement were injured in some way, but most names in the ‘C’ category list are not genuine. We didn’t add our names to the list. It needs thorough verification.”
Mezbahur Rahman Ramim, a student representative on the Verification Committee for Martyrs and Injured, clarified, “The list doesn’t only include those injured or killed in Jessore. Names from the capital and other districts were sent through the ministry, and we verified them.”
District Administrator Azharul Islam explained, “The list was prepared through the Health Ministry and verified by the district committee, which included two student representatives who conducted field inspections. However, discrepancies may exist. There is scope for correction through student-led verification.”
Amid the uproar, cheques were distributed. The ceremony, chaired by District Administrator Azharul Islam, was attended by Acting Civil Surgeon Dr. Nazmus Sadiq Russel, Additional District Administrator Nazibul Alam, Jessore 250-Bed General Hospital Superintendent Dr. Hosain Safayet, and Jessore Press Club President Zahid Hasan Tukun, among others.
