Eviction Drive in Suhrawardy Udyan Targets Illegal Structures

Dhaka, May 15, 2025: A large-scale eviction drive was launched in Dhaka’s historic Suhrawardy Udyan on Thursday, May 15, to dismantle illegal structures within the park. The operation, led by an executive magistrate from the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) and supported by the Shahbagh Police Station of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), began at 11:30 AM.

Confirming the operation, Khalid Monsur, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station, stated, “All illegal structures inside Suhrawardy Udyan are being demolished. There have been long-standing complaints of drug trafficking and consumption in these structures. Under the leadership of a RAJUK executive magistrate, we are conducting this eviction drive to address these issues.” He added that the goal is to make the park a safe and crime-free zone.
The eviction drive comes in the wake of a tragic incident that highlighted security concerns in the park. On Tuesday night (May 13), around midnight, Shahriar Alam Samy (25), a student of Dhaka University, was fatally stabbed by miscreants following an altercation sparked by a motorcycle collision. Samy was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead around 12:30 AM. In response, Dhaka University students staged a protest march that night, demanding justice for the killing and a safer campus environment.
The killing of Shahriar Alam Samy brought the issue of security in Suhrawardy Udyan into sharp focus. On Wednesday (May 14), Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Adviser to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, announced seven key decisions to address these concerns. These include evicting illegal shops, curbing drug trafficking, installing adequate lighting and CCTV cameras, and prohibiting public access to the park after 8 PM. The ongoing eviction drive is part of implementing these measures.
Suhrawardy Udyan holds immense historical significance for Bangladesh. It was the site of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s iconic speech on March 7, 1971, and the surrender of Pakistani forces on December 16, 1971, marking the end of the Liberation War. Through this eviction drive, authorities aim to restore the park’s historical dignity and transform it into a safe and orderly public space.
