Dhaka, 26 May 2025 : Four youths injured during the July movement consumed poison while admitted to the National Institute of Ophthalmology in the capital, demanding rehabilitation and other claims. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon during a meeting at the director’s office in Agargaon. The individuals, identified as Shimul, Maruf, Sagar, and Akhtar Hossain (Abu Taher), were later shifted to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. Doctors have confirmed that they are now out of danger.
According to hospital sources, the four youths approached the office of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the July Foundation during an ongoing meeting to press their demands. When asked to wait, they became agitated and consumed poison on the spot. It is initially believed that they had the poison with them beforehand.
Confirming the incident, Professor Dr. Khaer Ahmed Chowdhury, Director of the National Institute of Ophthalmology, said, “Four individuals injured in the July movement consumed poison today. They were immediately transferred to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, and they are now completely stable.” He added that during the meeting with the CEO, the youths came to discuss their demands. When asked to wait, they consumed poison in frustration.
Dr. Chowdhury further stated that 55 patients are currently under treatment at the hospital. Of them, 46 are healthy and no longer require hospitalization, while seven or eight still need medical attention. He noted, “Many patients are not in a good mental state. They fear that leaving the hospital could lead to issues with rehabilitation and other challenges, so they are reluctant to leave.”
He also alleged, “Even after completing treatment, some patients are insisting on staying in the hospital. Last Thursday, with a letter from the July Foundation, they forcibly got readmitted and even clashed with hospital staff.”
