Dhaka, May 26, 2025: The government has launched a major crackdown on online gambling, initiating the process to close over 1,000 mobile banking accounts linked to such activities. This is part of the latest efforts to curb gambling in cyberspace.
On Sunday (May 25), Foyez Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, confirmed the development in a Facebook post. Citing the National Cyber Security Agency, he stated that online gambling is completely banned, and the government is taking strict measures to enforce this.
Under Section 20 of the newly enacted Cyber Security Ordinance, 2025, any activities related to online gambling, including playing, creating or operating gambling apps/portals/devices, facilitating or promoting gambling, participating in advertisements, or directly/indirectly promoting such activities, are considered punishable offenses. Sections 21 and 22 of the ordinance also prohibit financial transactions, fraud, and forgery related to gambling.
Taiyeb revealed that over 1,100 agents involved in gambling have been identified, and legal action against them is underway. He urged those who have voluntarily participated in gambling advertisements to immediately cease such activities.
Furthermore, strict actions will be taken against professionals, celebrities, advertising agencies, media companies, media buyers, and print/electronic media involved in promoting gambling. Operators, software and tooling companies, mobile financial service (MFS) agents, banks, insurance companies, and those facilitating transactions through cryptocurrencies or hundi will also face action.
Taiyeb called on the public to report any information related to gambling activities to notify@ncsa.gov.bd
