The Infamous Goat of the "Goat Scandal" Found

Dhaka, June 5, 2025 – The goat that sparked a nationwide controversy during last year’s Eid-ul-Adha has resurfaced, reigniting discussions about the so-called “Goat Scandal.” The animal, initially priced at an astonishing BDT 1.5 million, was at the center of a storm involving former National Board of Revenue (NBR) official Matiur Rahman and his son, Mushfiqur Rahman Ifat. The scandal exposed allegations of corruption and unexplained wealth, leading to significant repercussions.

The controversy began when Mohammad Imran Hossain, owner of Sadik Agro Farm, posted a photo of the Brattle breed goat on social media, touting its exceptional lineage and size. The goat, standing 62 inches tall and weighing approximately 175 kg during Eid, was purchased by Mushfiqur, Matiur’s son, for BDT 1.5 million. A selfie of Mushfiqur with the goat went viral, prompting questions about how the son of a government official could afford such an extravagant purchase. Matiur later claimed Mushfiqur was not his son, but investigations revealed details of his second marriage and raised scrutiny over his sources of income.
The goat remained at Sadik Agro’s Mohammadpur farm, which was later demolished in June 2024 for being built on government land. The animals, including the infamous goat, were relocated to another farm in Savar. Sources confirm the goat, still unsold, has slightly reduced in weight but remains a rare specimen due to its size and breed. Sadik Agro officials have expressed intentions to donate the goat to the poor rather than sell it.
The scandal’s fallout continues. Following the student-led uprising on August 5, 2024, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country. On January 15, 2025, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against Matiur, his first wife Laila Kaniz, their son Toufiqur Rahman, and daughter Farjana Rahman for illegal wealth accumulation and concealing assets. Matiur and Laila were arrested the same day. Meanwhile, Mohammad Imran Hossain, the farm’s owner, is currently in jail.
The goat, once a symbol of opulence, remains a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against corruption in Bangladesh.
