A case has been filed in Khagrachhari accusing six individuals of gang-raping a 14-year-old girl. The victim's father lodged the complaint late Wednesday night, naming the accused.
Police have arrested four of the accused shortly after the case was filed. The arrested individuals are Arman Hossain (32), president of a union-level volunteer group, members Imon Hossain (25) and Enayet Hossain (35), and Saddam Hossain (32), general secretary of a workers' group. The other two accused, Md. Munir Islam (29), joint general secretary of a union-level BNP, and Md. Sohel Islam (23), assistant organizational secretary of the student wing, are currently absconding, according to police.
However, Khagrachhari district BNP general secretary MN Absar denied that the accused are affiliated with their party. Speaking to Prothom Alo, he said, “These six individuals are neither our workers nor leaders. Regardless of their affiliations, justice must be served. On behalf of myself and the district BNP, I demand a fair and proper trial for this incident.”
The victim is currently undergoing treatment at Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital.
According to the case statement, the incident occurred on June 27 during a fair for the Rath Yatra. The girl was at a relative’s house that night when the six accused allegedly raped her. Her relative was tied up during the assault.
The victim’s family stated that due to social stigma and fear, the girl initially did not disclose the incident. However, after losing mental stability and attempting suicide by consuming poison last Saturday, she was rushed to the hospital, where she revealed the ordeal to her family.
Dr. Riplu Bappi Chakma, the residential medical officer at Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital, told Prothom Alo that the girl’s condition is critical, and she is mentally distressed. She is receiving necessary medical care.
Khagrachhari Police Superintendent Arofine Jewel told Prothom Alo that four of the accused have been arrested, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining two.
