Sacked BDR Members’ March Dispersed by Police in Kakarail

Dhaka, July 7, 2025: Sacked members of the erstwhile Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) began a march from the National Museum in Shahbagh towards the official residence and office of the interim government’s Chief Adviser, ‘Jamuna,’ but were stopped by police in Kakarail, leading to their dispersal. The march started around 11:30 AM on Monday. The protesters, intending to besiege Yamuna, were halted by police near Kakarail Mosque around noon, causing them to scatter around Matsya Bhaban intersection, Kakarail, and nearby areas.

The sacked BDR members, dismissed during the tenure of the ousted Awami League government, have been protesting for reinstatement, the restoration of the BDR name (currently Border Guard Bangladesh, BGB), and other demands. Maruf Sarker, the son of a sacked BDR member, reported that police used water cannons, tear gas, and batons to disperse the march, injuring several protesters. As of this report, the protesters remain scattered in Shahbagh, Matsya Bhaban, and Kakarail areas.

According to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, two injured individuals, Md. Shamsul Haque (55) and Md. Yunus Ali (57), from the vicinity of Yamuna are receiving treatment.

Inspector (Operations) of Ramna Police Station, Atikul Islam, stated that the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has banned all gatherings, rallies, processions, and demonstrations in and around the Bangladesh Secretariat and the Chief Adviser’s official residence, Yamuna. The protesters were dispersed for violating this prohibition.
