Chittagong, September 4, 2025: Md Mamun Mia, a Sociology student at Chittagong University (CU), is showing signs of recovery after sustaining a critical head injury during violent clashes between CU students and locals on August 31. A bandage on his head carries the stark warning: "No bone, do not press," following a surgery where doctors removed part of his skull, which is now preserved in a freezer for potential reattachment in one to two months, depending on his progress.
Mamun, who was on life support for four days, regained consciousness and was shifted from the ICU to a cabin at Chattogram's Parkview Hospital today, according to hospital manager Zia Uddin. "He is now trying to communicate through gestures," said his friend Niaz Morshed.
Meanwhile, Imtiaz Mahmud Sayem, a master’s student in International Relations, remains unconscious after four days of treatment at the same hospital. "He might need another surgery," Zia Uddin added. A classmate described Imtiaz’s condition as critical, noting, "The CT scan shows a very concerning situation. He’s a calm person, never involved in trouble. Seeing him like this is unbearable."
Another student, Naimul Islam from Islamic Studies, suffered a ruptured artery and was transferred to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in Dhaka for advanced treatment. A friend shared, "We were terrified when we heard about his injury. We’re praying for his full recovery."
The clashes, sparked by the alleged assault of a female student on August 30 near CU’s Gate No. 2 in Jobra, escalated the following day, injuring at least 421 students, according to university authorities.
