Eight More Employees Suspended from Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant

Pabna, May 14, 2025: Eight additional officers and employees of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant have been temporarily suspended from their duties.

They have also been barred from entering the Rooppur project site and reassigned to the Green City site office. These individuals are employed by the Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL), which operates the Rooppur project.

The suspension orders, signed by Dr. Md. Zahedul Hassan, Project Director of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and Managing Director of NPCBL, were emailed late on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, around midnight. The orders took effect on Wednesday. Each suspended employee received a “show cause” notice, requiring them to explain within 10 working days why disciplinary action should not be taken against them. This follows the termination of 18 NPCBL employees on May 8 for similar reasons.
The suspended employees are Assistant Manager Iktiar Uddin Mohammad Biplob, Assistant Manager Shamim Ahmed, Senior Assistant Manager Md. Monir, Assistant Manager Mohammad Salahuddin, Senior Deputy Assistant Manager Mohammad Hosenuzzaman Khan, Government Manager Md. Golam Azam, Technician Riazuddin, and Md. Ismail Hossain.
On Wednesday afternoon, Ruhul Kuddus, Site Office In-Charge of the Rooppur project, confirmed the suspensions, stating that the eight employees were suspended for breaching discipline and violating service regulations. They have been reassigned to the Security and Physical Protection Services Department at the Green City office.
The notice sent to the employees alleges involvement in “disruptive or subversive activities” at the Rooppur site, negligence of duty, or misconduct. It references Service Regulation 2025, Clause 44.1, as the basis for their temporary suspension.
The suspensions are linked to ongoing protests at Rooppur, where around 1,800 employees began demonstrations on April 28, demanding the removal of the NPCBL Managing Director and other grievances. On May 6, they held a human chain and press conference in Ishwardi town. The following day, May 7, they staged a sit-in and protest at the Rooppur project office. After NPCBL issued warnings to comply with service rules, 18 employees were terminated on May 8. The latest suspensions bring the total number of affected employees to 26.
