Samy’s Murder: String of Decisions Taken for Sohrawardy Udyan Security

Dhaka, May 14, 2025: The brutal stabbing and murder of Dhaka University student and Chhatra Dal leader Shahriar Alam Samy in Sohrawardy Udyan has prompted swift action from the authorities. A series of decisions were made to enhance security in the park following a meeting on Wednesday (May 14) involving Dhaka University administration, police, the Local Government Division (LGD) Ministry, City Corporation, and other stakeholders.
The decisions include permanently closing the gate of Sohrawardy Udyan adjacent to the university’s TSC, launching search operations in the park starting Thursday, and forming a monitoring committee under the Public Works Ministry to ensure long-term development similar to Ramna Park. Additional measures involve installing sufficient CCTV cameras and lighting, establishing a police box by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) for enhanced security, and formulating a long-term plan to transform the park into a safe public space.
Samy was fatally stabbed by miscreants near the Mukta Mancha in Sohrawardy Udyan late Tuesday night. Reports indicate that the incident stemmed from a collision between Samy’s motorcycle and another, leading to an altercation. The assailants stabbed him and fled. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead at 12:30 AM.
The murder sparked outrage on the Dhaka University campus, with Chhatra Dal staging protests outside the Vice-Chancellor’s residence late Tuesday night. On Wednesday morning, hundreds of students gathered at the Raju Sculpture, demanding justice for Samy and the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor.
Samy’s janaza was held at the university’s central mosque after Johr prayers on Wednesday, attended by the Vice-Chancellor, Chhatra Dal leaders, and students. His body was then taken to his hometown in Sirajganj.
In connection with the murder, a Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered three arrested suspects to be sent to jail, rejecting a police request for a 10-day remand. The hearing took place before Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam.
Dhaka University has declared Thursday (May 15) a day of mourning and suspended classes and exams until 1:00 PM.
