05 June 2025 : At least 25 people, including the drivers, were injured in a head-on collision between two passenger buses on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Tongi, Gazipur. The accident occurred around 1:00 PM on Thursday, June 5, 2025, on the BRT flyover in the Cherag Ali area.
According to police and fire service sources, a Sonia Paribahan bus carrying passengers from Dhaka to their village homes for Eid collided head-on with a Nawab Sarker Paribahan bus heading towards Dhaka. The crash injured at least 25 people, including the drivers, women, and children. The two drivers, who were seriously injured, were rushed to Tongi Government Hospital for treatment.
The accident caused a suspension of traffic on the highway, leading to a kilometers-long traffic jam. Tongi Fire Service’s two units, along with local police and traffic police, arrived at the scene, removed the wrecked buses, and restored normal traffic flow.
Traffic Inspector Md. Safiqul Islam of Gazipur Metropolitan Police’s Tongi Zone stated that the collision occurred because one bus veered into the opposite lane on the flyover, which lacks a road divider. The empty roads during the Eid period may have contributed to the incident. Both drivers were trapped in their seats and were rescued by the fire service after nearly one and a half hours of effort. The injured were sent to Tongi Government Hospital and other nearby facilities for treatment. The inspector noted that the prolonged disruption of traffic on the highway could impact Eid travel.
